What does the driving instructor training (ADI) course involve?
Our training course can help you become a successful driving instructor. You will receive 50 hours of 1-to-1 training from a fully qualified Open Road Driving Instructor Trainer and interactive online learning all at a pace that fits with your other commitments. Our Sussex-based instructors are here to help you prepare for the ADI test, including Part 2 and Part 3 training and have the best chance of success.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Approved Driving Instructor test is in three parts.
Part 1 – Driving Theory
This test can be prepared for at home using online activities and supporting materials. You can arrange the test when you are ready. Your instructor trainer will give you 2 hours of help and support for this part. You will be tested on road procedure traffic signs and signals, driving test and laws, and instructional techniques.
The first test within your ADI training is in two parts – the theory test and a hazard perception test. The theory test consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, within the test there are four bands which each require a pass mark of 80%. You have 1½ hours to complete the test and need an overall pass mark of 85% for this part of the test. The hazard perception test consists of 14 video clips and the pass mark is 57 out of a possible 75. You are given a further 20 minutes to complete the hazard perception. The cost to sit both parts of the test is £81 and can be taken as many times as necessary. Our ADI Part 1 training covers the theory and hazard perception section of the ADI tests, with video help and support.
Part 2 – Driving Ability
The second test is a driving and eyesight test which is conducted by a Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency Supervising Examiner and lasts approximately one hour. You will be required to demonstrate your ability to drive and manoeuvre the car safely and under control. To pass you must not commit more than six minor or one serious fault. The cost to take this test is £111 and can be taken up to three times. We offer tailored ADI part 2 training packages in West Sussex, designed to work around your other work commitments.
10 hours in car practical driving sessions and online support with one of our instructor trainers to bring your personal driving ability up to the high standard of competence required by the DVSA.
Part 3 – Instructional Ability
The aim of the Part 3 exam is to assess your ability to instruct and whether your instruction helps a person to learn in an effective way.
The Part 3 exam will be conducted with a driving examiner observing you delivering a normal 1-hour lesson. You will be marked, amongst other things, on Lesson Planning, Risk Management and Teaching & Learning Strategies. The cost to take this test is £111 and can be taken up to three times. Our flexible ADI part 3 training is designed to fit around your work or other commitments.
The examiner will observe you giving a learner driver or a qualified driver seeking development, a 1-hour lesson. To help prepare you for this you will receive 40 hours of 1-to-1 in car training with your Open Road trainer to develop your skills and underpinning knowledge to deliver effective driver training.
The training for ADI Part 3 will be:
• Highly focused on developing your skills as a driving instructor
• Supported with additional learning materials for each in-car training session you complete
• Training tailored to your individual learning requirements with support and advise
After passing all three parts of the DVSA test, you will be awarded a green badge that means you are a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).
